VOICE OF MALAYSIA (Suara Malaysia)

The VOICE OF MALAYSIA is the overseas service of RADIO TELEVISION MALAYSIA, established on 15th February 1963. Transmissions are beamed towards Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia in the South; China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the Philippines in the North and East; and North Africa and West Asia.

Initially the Vom was established as a three languages service namely: English; Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin with an hour long broadcast by each service. Presently VOM broadcast in 8 languages : Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, English, Mandarin, Arabic, Thai, Tagalog and Myanmar. The programmes inform listeners about the life styles of multiracial Malaysians notably their customs, arts and cultures. It also strives to disseminate information on the Malaysian system of government, highlighting the past and present developments in the political, economic and social fields and at the same time to explain the Malaysian Government's domestic and foreign policies.

The VOM hopes to enhance the world's understanding of Malaysia and her desire to promote world peace and human progress
OBJECTIVES OF THE VOICE OF MALAYSIA
  1. To enhance the image of Malaysia with main emphasis on the lifestyle of Malaysians of all races- notably their customs, arts and culture.
  2. It also strives to disseminate information on the Malaysian system of government highlighting the past and present development in the political, economic and social fields.
  3. At the same time it also highlights the personalities of leaders in political, literature, culture, sports and other fields.
  4. It also broadcast visitor's views on all aspects of the country and its people.
  5. From time to time it broadcasts special programmes on state visits, conferences, conventions and international seminars that are held in the country.
  6. It also gives reports on sports events and do coverages on the International Quran Reciters Assembly which have made Malaysia well known to other parts of the world.

FORMAT AND METHOD APPLIED TO ACHIVE AIMS

RELIGION -- A 15 MINUTE "TALKS ON ISLAM" produced with the participation of a religious expert (Ustaz) who discusses all aspects of Islam.
NEWS - Both local and international news are presented by the news reader twice daily. News items are received from the radio newsroom in Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur.
ENTERTAINMENT - Variety of songs by local as well as international artistes are played through musical programmes aired daily.
INFORMATION AND EDUCATION -- Economic, political, cultural and social events are being highlighted through various topical programmes such as
Malaysia Today, Fascinating Malaysia, Health and other programmes.
SPORT - Local and international sporting events are highlighted through three 5 - minute sports programme presented by three producers.
WOMEN - Women's contributions to society as well as their remarkable achievements are being discussed in this programme.
